This year's Christmas gift 2024 Unisex fragrance Jimmy Boyd

This year's Christmas gift has been a tradition since 1988 when the bread machine hit the market with a bang. In 2009, the nail mat was chosen and who doesn't remember these two Christmas gifts with horror?

This year's Christmas gift 2024 is the Unisex fragrance and we are super happy that we have it in our range!

Jimmy Boyd creates unisex fragrances with ingredients only from nature. The passion for creating fragrances is great and the profession of perfumer has been passed down for three generations. For Jimmy Boyd, consideration for the environment and climate is central. All materials and ingredients are selected to ensure as little impact on the environment as possible. The fragrances in the “A collection of emotions” collection are light and give a refreshing feeling.

This year's Christmas gift should represent the times we live in and the unisex fragrance reflects our times by challenging traditional gender norms and highlighting the individual's personal expression. Young people in particular want fragrances that reflect them as individuals. After a few tough economic years, the unisex fragrance is an accessory that many treat themselves to.

We contacted Sweden's number 1 beauty guru Kicki Norman , editor-in-chief of Daisy Beauty Magazine . She knows everything about fragrances and we wanted to know how she sees the unisex fragrance as this year's Christmas gift.

How would you describe a unisex fragrance?
"The division of fragrance into men's and women's only came at the end of the 19th century when industrialism led to the new class society. A working middle class was born and with it both gender roles and more money to consume. The idea of women's and men's perfumes was thus constructed 100–150 years ago with the aim of selling more perfume. Since then, we have been instilled in ourselves that a women's perfume smells sweeter, lighter, fruitier or more floral than a men's perfume. A men's perfume is, in comparison, darker, woodier, muskier and often also citrus-scented.

A unisex fragrance is something else. It is a fragrance that is created to speak to everyone, regardless of gender identity. Actually, all perfumes are unisex, because anyone can choose to and want to smell anything! Historically, all perfumes have been free to use for whoever they please. In the Middle Ages, for example, perfume was used to mask body odor and since almost everyone smelled equally bad, everyone needed perfume, haha! Gender-specific perfume is therefore a modern invention … Which has now become unfashionable again!

What is unique about a unisex fragrance?
"It doesn't have the overt character of what we have been taught over the last hundred years to categorize as a gender-specific fragrance. And more important than the fragrance composition itself is the design and marketing! Especially there you can see that the unisex fragrance doesn't speak to one of just two genders, but to all."

This year's Christmas gift reflects the times we live in, why do you, as Sweden's leading beauty guru, think that this unisex fragrance has been chosen as this year's Christmas gift for 2024?
"It's no wonder that Swedish retail chooses a Christmas gift from the beauty segment. The cosmetics industry is the only industry that is growing faster than inflation globally. And just as obvious is the choice of a product that is neither male nor female coded! Young adults, what we call Gen Z, unlike previous generations, do not see gender as a binary but rather as a spectrum. This new awareness spills over into society in general and affects everything from popular culture to social institutions. Since the beauty industry is practically a part of popular culture today, it would be strange if it were not modernized in step with the times. Everything except the presidential elections in the US is actually moving forward."

So what does our perfumer Jimmy Boyd say?
“My opinion is that it’s just a marketing thing to put a gender on a scent. For me, the creation of a scent is a work of art and only the scent is important. I don’t think about whether I’m creating for a man or a woman. Think about it this way… A musician doesn’t think about whether they’re creating music for a man or a woman, they just create music. An artist creates art and a chef creates food, without thinking about whether it’s for a man or a woman. That’s exactly how it is with scents, for me.”
